High-Precision Radiotherapy

Some of the methods used in this type of radiotherapy include:

Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT)

IMRT is a specialised type of 3D conformal radiotherapy. As the name hints, intensity-modulated radiation allows us to modulate the intensity or concentration of each beam of radiation which is separated into thousands of beamlets. As a result, each field may have one or multiple areas of high intensity radiation and any number of lower intensity areas within the same field. This facilitates superior control of the distribution of the radiation dose with the location of the tumour.

Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT)

IGRT aims to target tumours more accurately while leaving normal tissues unaffected. The machines at Reliance Hospital Cancer Care Akola have a CT scanner with a kilovoltage imaging facility that can match the treatment image and planned image precisely, while offline and online. IGRT is one step in front of IMRT because various anatomical and biological imaging methods are incorporated into the overall process of radiotherapy.
