Conformal Radiotherapy

As technology progressed, radiation oncology moved from a 2-dimensional to a 3-dimensional planning system. This particular technology of external beam radiation planning takes into account 3 dimensional data of a tumour—its volume and the surrounding organs at risk. Planning is carried out using the CT simulation of the patient in a specific position with specific immobilisation devices. After this, images are transferred to a planning station where the tumour is delineated from other organs at risk. Finally, the dose is prescribed by the radiation oncologist. The entire process is computerised and a plan is made appropriately for treatment delivery.
