A certain amount of iodine is required in the body to produce a hormone called thyroid that controls metabolism and other body functions. Low levels of iodine can cause enlargement of the thyroid gland known as goiter. Iodine deficiency, if left untreated can lead to hypothyroidism. Iodized salt is a good source of iodine. Make sure you include it in your diet.
